At till checkouts the cashiers nowadays always ask if you want a receipt.  Why would people not want a receipt to double check.  I always check the receipt and regularly find something that has been overpriced.  Once in Lidl was charged £6 for a net of 3 onions!
Why waste a bit of paper that will only get chucked in the bin...

    Life in the slow lane

    You don't need a scanner.

If I want to keep track of how much I'm spending on a real time basis I just use the calculator function on my 'phone.

It isn't even a smart 'phone.  It's a 14 year old really "dumb" Samsung.

"Mrs" L always checks the paper receipt religiously especially for reduced items being erroneously charged at full price
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

That's the real problem:  people (including these forumites) defend these terrible business practises.  I wonder who they work for?
Funny thing is I suspect that more than one poster on this thread works for a large retail or other organisation offering a service to consumers, and they always give really good advice on these pages.

You can always order from Ocado etc., but that doesn't give you yellow sticker discounts.

We however do quite well from the Ocado / Tesco shop comparator vouchers.

The scanner has the advantage of showing you what you're actually being charged.

yes, if you don't know what you are being charged then adding it up on a phone doesn't help.

A hand held scanner shows you in real.time what you are paying - which may not be the same as what the shelf label displays

Sorry but you've both lost me.

If the final charge is different from the running total on my 'phone, then obviously I've been wrongly charged.

How would I not know what I'm being charged?

You'd only know what you're being charged after you've been through the till and looked at the receipt. And even then you'd need some work to figure out what the discrepancy is. Use the scanner and you know immediately what the price is on their system and whether it matches the shelf ticket.
