natedawg_99 said:Hi all Iβve received a tax calculation letter from HMRC on 17th of may saying Iβve overpaid Β£6k in the 24/25 tax year yes Iβve been working PAYE all year up until jan 2025 then I worked self employed (CIS) till march 2025 I sent off a self assessment I was paying 40% until I got my UTR through then to bring my tax down if thatβs makes sense, Iβve called up hmrc to see if this letter is legit and not a scam and they told me over the phone yes thatβs correct we do owe you this amount they can see it on there side.. due to my passport being out of date I canβt get verify my identity on website or app to sort on hmrc app so doing it old school way is the only way?? they have told me a cheque will be sent out to me wait up to 6-7weeks or even longer..Β
when I called up multiple times to recover this then tell me when I last called and then hang up as they said calling up can delay my cheque being sent out!! I feel like this aload of bonkersΒ
Any advice please? CheersΒ1 -
OP, if you are going to call people out for a simple oversight then at least get your facts right in your post. There is no 40% rate in CIS. Rates are 20% for verified (those with UTR) and 30% for unverified like you were.

Rather than being snippy with people taking time to respond to you, why not renew your passport which takes a couple of weeks. ΒYou can also use a photo card driving license, I think there is also a ID verification service at the Post Office.2

If I had Β£6K owing which was delayed because I didn't have current Government ID I recon spending Β£100 on renewing a passport that'll do me for the next 10 years would be a good investment.3

The real issue to me is the amount of the repayment- Β£6000 seems very large considering only three months of self-employment! Still, we donβt know what tax was paid at PAYE but I would imagine HMRC would be making further checks before issuing butβ¦just conjecture on my part.Β2

As said above Β£6k is a lot of money and may not well be correct. Not uncommon for those trying to DIY their tax return to enter the net lay instead of gross in the relevant box for example, which will generate an incorrect overpayment.

You said in your OP that you sent in a Self Assessment Tax Return, no? And you got a self assessment tax calculation.

If your attitude is the same when you phone HMRC Ian not surprised they put the phone down.Β
