Self assessment demand extra tax from me every year but they owe me £4000+

Sorry for the alarmist title.

Check your self assessment balance!!
My tax affairs are very simple but I end up being told I need to pay a few hundred quid at each self assessment due to taxable perks and some savings interest.

This year I really needed to check that my payment had arrived before the 31st and found a link to check my account balance.
Well HMRC owed me £4000+ and have done for years. I'm sure I've never had any messages or emails about it. It was a total surprise.

I think that they've been over collecting through my tax code due to me cutting back on the perks each year and earning less interest. Who knows but good idea to check your balance when you do your self assessment

it is up to you to pay your self assessment bill but when doing so it is up to you to check your online tax account balance and pay the net amount due, which may be different to the total on SA return if you have prior year balances you have not yet settled

been like that from the start
