I missed my 2024 target of 20,000 by a tiny amount (19,978). But I deliberately only count steps as part of a run or a proper walk. I am not counting pottering around the kitchen in mine. I only put my tracker on when I’m exercising.

PS the calorie count of 3,500 is at least overstated by 200%.
  • Just managed to beat Martin, with 24,862 steps per day in 2024. 1381 days since I last missed 10,000 per day (after a knee replacement op). Hoping to get the average back over 25,000 per day this year.

Martin has written about how he achieves so many steps on such a regular basis and it is a way that I (and I think many people) would simply not be able to incorporate into their regular lifestyles with work commitments etc.

For example, I think one of the items Martin has referenced is walking to office / meetings / recording studios.  If I have to attend a meeting, it is a similar distance to that which Martin has to cover - except I need to be in a suit and cannot arrive breathless (soon recovers) or, even worse, sweaty and fragrant.

I trust the step count part of modern fitness trackers as sufficiently accurate.  The stated calories burned seems high.  As a comparison, in the past two months, I only manage to match Martin's average calories burned (well, a bit less at 3,819) on a day when I did a half-marathon (32k steps in total for the day).  Running a good proportion of those steps will burn far more calories than the same steps walked.

EDIT to add:  I wonder whether Martin tracks his calorie intake?  There are free (very-MSE) apps available (I use MFP).  If his intake varies from his burn over the year, he will change weight in proportion.
