Hi,
My brother has found himself homeless and he wants me to register him on my council tax. I know his business went bankrupt but I’m worried about him being registered with me and the harm it will do my credit score plus any future partners I have and if I have children. I want to help him but I don’t want to mess up my future! Does anyone know if I can stop someone registering a business and if an ex bankrupt will impact my credit?
I don’t trust him but want to help him. HELP

You say he is homeless, but where is he actually staying ?

I don't understand why he wants to register for council tax with you - even if he were staying with you, there's no need for him to be on the bill (although if you are currently claiming the single person discount you'll need to let the council know that you are no longer living alone and don't qualify any more).

Or is it that he wants to be on the electoral roll ? I belevie ther are ways that homeless people can get registered without having to give an address....

Your credit score is irrelevant, in the UK. Your credit record is personal, attached to you not the address.

Speak to the local council about ways in which your brother can enrol on the electoral register.

And try to assess why he wants to register with you? Is he trying to get a bank account, difficult without being on the electoral roll and having a utility bill and make it difficult to get income and benefits. There are also problems getting phone accounts

Or is he hoping to get future credit?

  • So he’s living with me temporarily but wants to set himself up so asked if he can register at mine for obvious reasons.

    Register for what?

He can't register for Council Tax because you are the person with the liability, not him.

so asked if he can register at mine for obvious reasons.

Register for what and what obvious reasons ?

Being linked to your address won't affect your credit but if he has debt problems it could mean debt collectors knocking on your door and although they are pretty much powerless it could be a PITA and get the neighbours gossiping.

If he wants to be on the electoral register then he can do that without being registered at your address

Do you mean he wants to register a business at your address?
