Given that  Father is stated to be a very controlling person, the likelihood is that a will exists.

As Mother is still in the marital home, unless Father kept all his papers in a bank vault or similar, it seems virtually certain that they are held in a file of some sort in his bedroom/study/ safe /loft etc.

The OP will need to make a careful search as soon as possible.

It is not known if he made a will as he was a very private person and did not discuss this

If there is any historic correspondance with a solicitor (or bank manager?) it may be worth contacting the firm(s) involved to ask whether they have a will on file. It wouldn't be released until a death certificate is, sadly, available but could settle the question.

Unfortunately if the answer is no, it wouldn't prove there was no will.

The bank or solicitor maybe be even reluctant to divulge any info at all without a LPA in place.
Probably it will all have to wait until he passes away, and then the son acting as Executor can ask for info then.
