Why does HMRC think I'm Scottish?

If you fill in an online Self Assessment tax return, there’s a box for you to tell HMRC that you pay Scottish Income Tax.

No, I've never lived in Scotland and definitely haven't ticked that box. This seems to be HMRC somehow mixing up the Glasgow payroll department of a former employer with my home address.

Well as Scottish HR kicks in at a tad over £43k compared to just over £50k south of the border then a refund looks due.....plus the 21% you paid on some earnings when it should have been 20.

You need to go back to that employer and get them to correct the errors.

The payroll provider have messed up your address.

Get them to correct it. They will likely have to resubmit a whole lot of RTI
