Why does HMRC think I'm Scottish?

in Cutting tax
I've logged into the government gateway for the first time in ages to find that my address has been changed to somewhere in Scotland (it's the address of the payroll department of a former employer) and I'm listed as Scottish with Scottish tax codes as of April 2023. I live in the south of England. Since Scottish tax brackets are different, this will surely mean an unexpected bill! What on earth do I do? I promise I didn't do this myself. I'm really worried now. Please help.

I'm trying to fill in a tax return but can't unless I sort this out.0

You should get the option to correct your address at the start of the tax return, in the personal details section?
Have you already corrected it within your personal tax account now you've seen it's wrong there?

I'm scared to in case it suddenly creates a huge tax bill! I thought it probably wiser to talk to someone at HMRC first in case they have to do anything to set it straight? I now see that it must have happened before April 23 as my P60 has a final tax code that starts with S.0

How long has the S been appearing on your payslips?
What have whoever pays you said?

I'm going to have to go over my payslips and check - I didn't realise that the S was weird and had no idea that Scottish tax was different.0

It's been there since April 22!Ayr_Rage said:How long has the S been appearing on your payslips?

How much do you earn?
Chances are you will be due a refund.0 -
I'm high rate on either side of the border.0

Scottish Rates are a little higher so you've more than likely overpaid tax. If you put your P60 figures in a tax calculator it will give you an idea.0

Well as Scottish HR kicks in at a tad over £43k compared to just over £50k south of the border then a refund looks due.....plus the 21% you paid on some earnings when it should have been 20.ElizabethTudorisme said:I'm high rate on either side of the border.1
