Make Do, Mend & Minimise in 2025 (and 2024)

I've had a combined Make Do and Minimise today by using up odds and ends from the fridge to make a crustless quiche; instead of making one big one I've done mini ones in a muffin tray, some in the fridge and the others in the freezer. They'll do for a meal with salad, chips etc or on their own for a snack.
One item gone from the Must Use Up list - a packet mix of rosti potatoes that I bought YS earlier in the year. Quick and easy to make, cooked to a nice golden brown colour - taste wise, edible but not fantastic, so I know not to buy that again.
I had a delivery today of three summer dresses and will be returning one (not a good fit and the fabric is rather poor quality) but the parcel will have to wait until next week as the PO is closed over the holidays. On the one in/one out basis, I'll have to decide what two items can leave the house - I think I know what they will be.
I've cut the net curtain down to the size I need it to be but still haven't sewn the new channel at the top. Maybe tonight.Be kind to others and to yourself too.8 -
@YorksLass i like the idea of muffin tin crustless quiche. I love crustless quiche.7

I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend.
Make do: Ate some leftover pasta bake for lunch rather than waste it.
Mend: Sewed a hanging loop onto a miniature stocking to go to charity. Also glued together some of my Easter decorations and added hanging ribbons if they needed them.
Minimise: Bagged up some books and cd's for the charity shop. I tried trading them with online book warehouses but they didn't want them so off they go. Hopefully someone will like them.
Have a nice week. X

Mend. Noticed the screw had come out of the bracket holding up our bedroom curtains. Finally got round to whacking it back into the wall and it looks like it will last a bit longer. I hate drilling into our walls.8

Make do - potted up some rooted plants that needed this months ago.
Mend - hand stitched GD's race shirt as she had damaged under the arm.
Minimise - moved 2 boxes of brass ornaments from the house, not really noticeable as they were stored in a box. They are now sat in DH's van until I can do another car boot. Also 2 items brand new in their appropriate boxes also now sat in the van.
Hope you all have had a lovely weekend.

Not much done over the Bank Holiday but I have managed to use up a few more items from the Use Up list - the last four Weetabix (I have two other boxes of cereals plus oats), the last packet of crisps and an individual sponge pudding. A book I've finished reading has been passed on to DS and I've told him I don't want it back, he can pass it on to someone else or take it to his nearest CS.
Waiting in the wings are a returns parcel to take to the PO and two summer tops for the SA clothing bank station at some point, either today or tomorrow.Be kind to others and to yourself too.7 -
@YorksLass made mini quiche in large ramekins last night. Made six. Three for tea with chips and three for lunch today.6

@Green_hopeful - I've still got four mini quiches in the freezer, they'll do for a couple of lunches this week with side salad.
The returns parcel went off to the PO but the bag of two tops hasn't made it to the SA clothing bank as I've added to it - a hair claw (washed and sterilised) that I used to use when my hair was long and three children's knitting pattern books - so it can go to the CS instead.
Yesterday I made a batch of fruit scones with wholemeal flour and yogurt that both need using up. This morning I diluted more of the yogurt down with milk and had it on cereal with half a sliced banana. I'd intended to add a drizzle of honey too but my runny honey is no longer runny. It will be though once it's been stood in a jug of hot water for a while!

Not sure it’s right for this thread but it’s still pretty good. I lost my job a couple of years ago and haven’t worked since although I am going to do a bit of invigilating to get my class 2 national insurance. But anyways lots of time so I have been helping friends and family with forms and admin. I applied for a state pension for an uncle who didn’t think he was entitled to anythIng. He got £135 a week plus £9000 in back payments. A friend who is registered blind had been ignoring his attendance allowance form, its a 32 page form, has got the higher rate approved. I can’t remember the exact amount but its over £100 a week. Another friend was worrying about letting out part of his house but with encouragement he did it and is getting £400 a month. Just waiting to see if he gets some state pension. Not sure he will but worth a try. All people that are short of money that now have a bit more. I have also registered last powers of attorney and helped them complete simple Wills. The lasting powers minimised my money because I paid for them rather than trying to claim for the low income option. I am going to say I have minimised their admin.15

A few of the things I’ve got round to in month one of retirement…
Make do: Almost all the out-of-date or short-date ingredients in my fridge, freezer and baking cupboard have been turned into meals, plus there have been several cakes or tea loaves. There’s a batch of candied peel cooking now for a future cake*. I may actually cook that frozen liver this week! I’m making inroads on the food cupboard too.
Mend: I brought back some large pots from the final clearance of my parents’ house. There were two starved agapanthus among the weeds. I’ve potted them into fresh soil and put them in a sunny spot and they’re being fed a weak solution of plant food every other day. They’ve already greened up and are starting to grow.
Minimise: The sales table at the food bank always has jams and chutneys in misc reused jars. I checked with the helper and she thinks ‘Mick the Jam Man’ would like my surplus, matching jam jars - the ones with gingham lids - that were lurking behind my baking stocks.
