Gammon doesn't fit .... argh

 I am a notice, but decided to do a ham for Xmas.
I have just taken my gammon out of the fridge and stuck it in the pot of the slow cooker, to soak it overnight, to get rid of some of the saltiness.
BUT, it doesn't fit  (well it fits but there is about 2cm sticking out the top, although the lid does fit on), and considering I wanted to cook it in the slow cooker tomorrow I am worried.
If I turned the meat over half way through soaking AND cooking, do you think it would be okay ?????
Also, it is 4.5kgs so how long do you reckon it needs to be in the slow cooker for ?
Everything failing, I can roast it, but I really wanted to do the coke recipe thingie.
Many many thanks for any help offerred .....

I would think it would be alright to turn it over as the meat will quickly shrink when it start to cook, I have no idea about times though.
I may have misunderstood you post but do you mean you're leaving the meat out all night soaking it? If so, I think meat should only be left out of the fridge for a short time before you cook it. If I've got this wrong, sorry:o0 -
I would think thats fine - I have done this when I had a ham too big for my pan, as for leaving it out to soak in water all night I have also done that and its been fine, as long as your room is cool you should have no problem as the water will keep it cool!

I leave my ham soaking overnight out of the fridge every year and no-one has ever suffered as a result after all hams contain salt as a preservative

Hams were cured in the old days and hung unrefrigerated for many months - the salt preserves the meat. It will be fine left overnight to soak; if you dont you will end up with very salty meat.
I would just turn it, i always turn my meat when cooking anyway. I just cooked a 1kg joint of beef in 4 hours on high, so i think you need to be thinking along the lines of a good 10 hours, maybe more. Blimey that's a big joint. I've got the same size ham it it wont fit in my largest pan.
Just shoved it in my massive mixing bowl to soak over night in the fridge and I think I am just going to have to cut it in half or something and do it in seperate pans or something.

I did a 4 kg ham today in the slow cooker, once it started cooking the lid came of as it seemed to have expanded. I got tin foil wrapped that over the top and it has come out fine. Just finished it off for 20 mins in the oven to glaze the top with honey and mustard mix.No Matter what you do there will be critics.0
