Carpet Cleaner Advice Please

I am thinking of buying a carpet cleaner and would appreciate a bit of advice, as I'm not familiar with what features to look for. The only definite stipulation I have is that it must be capable of cleaning carpets on stairs - both the tread and the face of the steps - and I'm not sure that all write-ups of machines make it clear whether they can do that. Would I be able to get a decent one for less that £200, or ought I to pay more?

Vax have sales where they sell off returns at a good discount. I think money saving expert advertise when the sale is on. Our one has an upholstery attachment for cleaning furniture. It’s a bit like the stairs attachment on a vacuum cleaner. I haven’t used it for the stairs but I am sure it would work. It might take two people because the main vax unit is quite large and I think it would be hard to balance it on the stairs whilst using the attachment. The vax shampoo is quite expensive so it is worth getting one with a deal on the shampoo. I think we got four bottles with our machine. Our vax is quite heavy to use.2
