  • I’ve just noticed that a regulated rail fare (for a season ticket) I happened to look for in late May this year has now increased since then (by c4.2%). I thought that regulated fares increased in March this year and that the next increase wouldn’t be until c next March (’25).

On contacting National Rail Enquiries they told me that there was an increase on 2nd June this year, and furthermore that there will be a further increase on 15th Sept this year. So that sounds like 3 increases (at least) in 1 year. They also told me that the price is set by the individual train operator (Avanti) and that I should contact them.

On contacting Avanti, their customer service manager knew only about the March increase and wasn’t able to give me any more information; she also wasn’t able to check what the price had been in May. She said that I should contact the Office of Rail and Road who set the fares, and I have submitted a Freedom of Information request to them today.

Does anyone know about the increases in June and Sept this year in addition to that in March this year? Google seems to have absolutely no information/articles about these additional price increases. Are these increases that have been silently implemented without anyone being aware? If they’re each at around 4% that would amount to an annual increase of over 12%...

It's entirely normal for there to be several minor fares revisions each year, but it's the March (formerly January) one that gets most of the publicity.
