Alion's Mortgage Reduction Diary

7 months after moving in and 5 months pregnant!
We paid the last of the big bills last night for the renovations and now we're down to little bits. We have heating and electrics and the plastering is mostly done. We have a few more fair sized expenses (carpet, wardrobe, carpenter, baby stuff, etc) but the electrician and plumber are all paid up.
We're really proud that by being really good through the works we've managed to not just compress the timescales so the work's done before baby arrives but also do it without taking out any loans and whilst keeping a good rainy day fund.
My maternity benefits are rather good so hopefully we'll be able to start overpaying again soon.29/01/07 - Took on our first home for £225k, mortgage of £200,700, reduced to £70,224.44 in 6yrs

Alion,
First of all I'd like to say congratulations on the little bundle of joy!:D
I've just read your diary from start to finish, and it's the most inspirational thread I've read on here! So much so, it inspired me to write my first comment! *nervous*
I'm a young, single first-time buyer and utterly overwhelmed by the whole mortgage situation. I was thinking of giving up when I found out what a Credit Report was ,and that my score was poor!:( (Uni days).
But after reading your diary, I remembered why I wanted to buy, and how much is to gain by putting everything I can into tackling a mortgage! I will always have set backs, I just have to keep soldiering through.
Anyway, rambling aside. Thanks for the inspiration!I'm attempting a spreadsheet now (although I'm not that tech savvy, it might take a while:rotfl:).
97 months until I qualify!

Hi there sbowden, thank you for your very kind words, I'm so glad that my diary can help someone else. I've never envied people buying on their own - it seems so much harder without someone else to back you up and the security of a second income. I have so much respect for people who do it.
What is your situation? You should start a diary too - it really makes such a difference and gives you a great opportunity to look back at what you've achieved. If you do, let me know - I'd love to see what you're up to although I must admit I don't come on here all that often at the moment as our overpayment journey is on hold.29/01/07 - Took on our first home for £225k, mortgage of £200,700, reduced to £70,224.44 in 6yrs
