Carer's Credit

Dear All,
In 2012 I moved to a part-time job to look after my partner.
In 2017 my partner was diagnosed with dementia.
In 2022 we found out about attendance and carer's allowances and started receiving both.
In 2023 I found out about the carer's credit. The carer's allowances can go back to the date when the attendance allowance was approved, i.e., 2022. However, the carer's credit, it seems does not have any stated period.
My question is, can the carer's credit go back to 2012?
What do I have to provide to support my application?

I dont know but if you read through https://www.gov.uk/carers-credit you will find a contact number where you should be able to get the info you need.

I phoned them, but they didn't confirm anything. "Apply and we will see" was the answer. Phoned Citizens Advice, but they can only confirm what I already read. So I wish I could find someone with the experience.

Why not just do what they suggest?  Complete the claim and send it in seeking credits from 2012...

The form, apart from personal details, has only one question - "Other information". I am not entirely sure what to write there.

Secondly, the form asks date when I want to start the carer's credit (which is fine) but then there is a question if my partner is getting the attendance allowance, and if the answer is Yes they don't want the medical certificate, so I cannot show them that dementia officially started in 2017.

I suggest you just fill in the form as completely as possible to the best of your knowledge, the more relevent information you can give them the better.  If you dont know something say so.  These forms aren't GCSEs in form-filling but rather an attempt to get the information they need.

Then it is up to them to say what more information or documentation is required.  The start date of dementia would presumably be available from the NHS medical records which perhaps they could access or you may be able to get from the GPs office. Similarly they may well be able to access any attendance allowance records.
  • I don't think that you will get it: I also tried to make a back-dated claim for Carer's Pension Credits for caring for my son from 2012 to 2019. The DWP have a 12 month time limit for claims for Carer's Credit, and they are strictly enforcing this time limit. My claim was rejected, and I was told, over the phone, that I was 'out of time'.
You may have better luck than me.

No you can’t go back that far. If you apply right now you can go back to the previous full tax year so 2021/22.

I didn’t have to provide anything although I had ticked the box that said my Dad was in receipt of Attendance Allowance. If not you would have to get a signed declaration from someone like a Doctor or Nurse.

It’s explained on Page 7 here.
