Olive Oil Moneysaving tip

Options
If you have a recipe that asks for butter and you are health conscious (like me) than a tip I use is NOT to use new oil. I buy items like jars of olives in garlic olive oil, and after I have used the olives, I then use the oil left in the jar as a base for anything really, frying onions for a curry, or any vegetables etc. It's really yummy (if you like garlic, that is;) ;) )

  • Good tip, likewise the oil from a jar of sun-dried tomatoes is too good to pour down the sink ;)

I'd never thought of this! Strange, as I always reuse the vinegar from pickled onions - exactly the same principle.

Wow, I can't imagine throwing that oil away! I'd use it in any way I could. What a waste to chuck it.

  • Any oil that comes in jar with olives, tomatoes, artichokes etc makes great salad dressing.
  • Just watch as I think oil that has been infused with onions or garlic can develop bottulism. Can't remember the details exactly but I think you have to use it within a short time after opening but can't remember what it is. Sorry I can't remember the details very well but didn't want anyone getting ill.
  • When doing my world famous tuna and pasta, I use the oil from the anchovies to fry the onions & garlic.

I think the problem is when you try and preserve garlic yourself in oil. I used to but read that it is prone to botulism. The shop bought versions have to be specially treated. I've not seen any warnings about the oil from these products.

As an aside, I have a septic tank and have to be very careful not to throw oil and fat down the sink. I now recycle as much of it as I can - if I have to dispose of it I have to soak it up with kitchen paper (don't get newspapers) and then bin. I find that the pre-flavoured fats and oils make the food taste better.
