@Tahlullah.H we line the litter tray with cardboard, junk post, free papers etc and buy a large bag of litter from PaH.

Years ago I used to cut up paper and use that as litter, mixed in with a bit of normal litter.

Again, year ago I used to have a 3 tier steamer, could layer my veg to cook it.

I was also quite fond of my 'one pot' meals, fling everything in at various points to cook.

I wouldn't worry about that, the whole country is like a big open debtors prison, plagued by the constant anxiety of debt.

Wow, YorksLass, about the electric oven…you’ve triggered a memory…my mum was born in 1920, one of about 6 or 7. She always talked - and taught us - common sense. I remember her telling us about one of her sisters who had an electric cooker. After dishing up the dinner, she would fill the washing-up bowl (a big enamel one in those days) with cold water, put it in the oven, and close the oven door. By the time they’d finished the meal, the water was hot enough to wash up! I often wonder what she would make of the current situation and what she would be saying! I love reading Jackie O’s posts…(you are so like my mum, complete with your ‘Reasons to be Cheerful’ and your resilient ‘let’s keep going, folks’ attitude, Jackie O!).

To change the topic completely, me and DS are getting our first trip 'off island' since lockdown next week, and in preparation we had a wee sort out/look through the clothes, partly to remind myself I don't really need to buy much new clothing and partly to see what DS will need, as he's nearly 15 and growing. I have successfully convinced myself that there are only a few things I will look to purchase, however it turns out DS has grown out of many of his clothes! He would always rather have nicer stuff but less of it, and isn't greedy, but we will need to add some bits of clothing to his list - hopefully there will be more choice in Inverness than here (though there is a nice clothes shop in town where he does get some things, and they're very helpful). We are only away for a few days, but, despite all the financial woes of the world right now (and me wanting to save as much as possible) this will do us good. Holidays are a luxury but for island folk it really does help to get away for a wee change, and it's only down to Inverness (not off to to anywhere too exciting). Again, not complaining as I love living here!

I think she was referring to my post about people who have moved into the village complaining… did you know sheep can baa too loudly and should be shut indoors in the evening in summer as they keep people awake?

I just don't see the need for all these posts about complaining, that's all. People who move to new areas, be it city or village or island, often complain, just until they get used to it! Where I live folk who were born here complain as much as folk who moved here. I guess the big issue is folk who try to change things, but then again, sometimes change is needed, and it takes new eyes to see it! Anyway......I didn't intend my one post about slurry smells to start this, it was just a passing comment about the reality of hanging my washing out!

That's a really good idea and 1 I hadn't thought of. Both mine are in walking distance but in 2 separate directions. I usually go to Tesco afterwards to pick up the bits they don't sell. I will start doing this the opposite way round.

When I started dating Mr S he lived in an apartment (small block of 6 flats) and they weren't allowed to hang clothes outside in their communal garden either. 

We went to pack up most of teenager daughter's items from her student digs. My Mum came round to collect the dog and discovered DD had gone out leaving  the back door open and the oven on! Unfortunately my Mum didn't fully switch the oven off either. She turned the temp off but not the button that says whether its grill/oven etc. I discovered it this morning - sigh!  

Does anyone know whether using lids on saucepans further reduces cooking time on hobs? I think  I've read it does but not entirely sure.

I always use lids to reduce the cooking time.  I only leave the lid off if I have something with a sauce in it which needs reducing because it's too thin!
