Would not use that as a defence - I was always told you drive your car not the others. The variable limits are a pain but knowing that they are also linked to cameras I take notice even if there are few cars around.
They may be a pain, but much less so than what happened before they were introduced - constant stop and start at busy times, punctuated with frequent shunts.

BTW your ‘bold’ key seems to be stuck!

Motorways are particularly safe because you have traffic all traveling in the same direction at similar speeds. If some people obey speed limit reductions and others don't things become very dangerous.

I think you can mitigate your punishment in person in court, i got summoned to court for speeding, no other options due to the speed, attended in best bib n tucker, apologised etc, got 6 points and a fine......everyone said i'd get banned as it was over 100mph....

Automatic bans for over 100 in a 70 limit are a thing of the past. I would always go SJ in the OP's position.  You still get the chance to mitigate.
  • Indeed. And if the SJ considers a ban may be appropriate the case will be adjourned for a hearing in the normal court and the defendant will be invited to attend. If it's simply the avoidance of a ban that the defendant wants to try to influence, it makes no sense to ask for a full court hearing in the first instance as the SJ will not impose a disqualification.
