The OP lives on their own. However, it's not necessary to have another person present. Just switch everything on, especially high power items including the tumble dryer on the highest setting, oven, hob and a full kettle. Look at the red light on the meter (marked 1000 Imp/kWh) or similar and make sure it's flashing rapidly. Then switch off all the individual circuits at the consumer unit ending with the main switch, then check the red light again for a few minutes and make sure it doesn't flash once. Note the serial number on the meter and make sure it's the same as the one shown on the bill.QrizB said:As kazwookie said, it's possible that the caretaker is reading the wrong meter. You need to get access yourself and positively confirm it's the right one. There's a simple way to check but you'll need one person in your house (to turn the kettle on and off) and another at the meter, both in contact by eg. mobile phone.2 -
First time moving out of home. This was after uni and I didn't really know muchmacman said:You can switch tariff, but not a hope in hell of switching supplier with that level of debt.
How did you ever think that '£7 to £20' pm would ever begin to pay for an all-electric flat?0 -
So you didn't verify the opening read 4 years ago? No way now to know if that was correct or not.
Which is why you must insist on access to check the meter reads yourself, and check that it's the right meter s/n. The LL cannot refuse this.No free lunch, and no free laptop

You must read that meter - YOURSELF - NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't wait - nock on that managers door. When reading the meterswitch off the main switch is there and prove that everything goes dead in your "flat" - photograph the meter.
Give us and the supplier the meter reads - you will get a new bill.
Really £7 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! What do they teach at school and university these days ? Not household economics it would seem.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
OK, so assuming the readings are correct you've used (157903-96535) 61368kWh day rate and (103831-80094) 23737kWh night rate in roughly four years.Thealybot said:Meter reading was taken by my landlord on 28/9/17 when I moved in which was 96535 and 80094
I have registered a complaint with eon and am waiting for a resolutions manager to ring me. They've told me that they've put the bill
I live on my own in a 2 bed flat, electric only. Storage heaters. It's an old mill probably 1800s sometime. High ceilings in some room could be a factor? Only heat the room I am in durinf winter. Main appliances used are dishwasher, washing machine fridge basic kitchen appliances and TV.On the plus side, 6000kWh/yr of night rate for your storage heaters isn't too bad. But 15000kWk/yr of day rate is crazy high for a single person in a 2-bed flat. That's 40kWh per day, equal to running a kettle continuously from 8am to 9pm, and five or six times the amount we use for three of us in a three-bed semi.- How do you heat your hot water? Is there an immersion heater that comes on overnight with your storage heaters?
- Have you got any other heating - underfloor heating, panel heaters (magic or otherwise), radiant heaters - that you use?

It may be worth mentioning that I was away from the flat being May 19 - Sept 19 and during the first lockdown in 2020 I was not in the flat and between March 9th and the end of June this year I was also away from the flat0

I wonder whether the caretaker's flat is always tropically hot because the bills are always so low...

@Thealybot May I ask what happened to your tariff in the last 4 years ? Assuming you were initially on a 12 month fix did you take any new fixes you were offered ?
During your absences in 2019 and 2021 did you switch your heating and water heating off ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
In 2019 and 2021 I believe everything was switched off0
