Lifestyle aids or hinders low budgets.  I am single, but never, ever, ever, ever, cater for anybody else whatsoever.  Nobody's cooking for me, nor bringing me their windfalls; I am not cooking for others and able to batch cook and add variety into what I cook.  Everything I buy is for me, I cook it all, I eat it all.  I have also never had the space afforded by "a family home", nor had large freezers/fridges.

I aim for £10/week for food.... but I don't keep a tally as I know I am tight with what I buy + I also buy myself "treats" and acknowledge them as such ... and I could spend more if I wished.

I could cut back on my treats (fizzy pop in the summer is my biggest treat, currently going through a "you deserve it" few months on that front)... but sometimes it's the only thing that keeps me going :)

Right now I am stuck "between  houses" as I was house-hunting (having just sold) when the whole lockdown hit me and the market ground to a halt... so I am currently in one room in an HMO with a small shelf in a shared fridge and half of one shelf in a shared freezer (large enough for 3 ready meals for one, but not large enough for 1Kg of chips)... so mostly eating crumpets, toast, quick nuked ready meals, bananas ... sweeties, crisps and fizzy pop.  I try to minimise any time spent in the shared kitchen (8 people) as about half of them aren't distancers... and a couple laugh about that ... and one even thinks the whole thing is a conspiracy or hoax so refuses to distance or be careful around others...
  • I’ve already described in previous posts how I keep my food bill down but I’ve thought about another low cost meal. On Thurs I defrosted some pig’s liver in fridge overnight. It was from Asda, £2 kg and my pack cost £1.11. I gently fried some onions in a little rapeseed oil, then added the liver in pieces about 1 in by half inch, added water and a stock cube (Aldi beef stock cube 35p for 12) and a dessertspoonful of gravy granules. I did mashed potatoes (I grow my own), carrots and frozen green beans. The liver and onions was sufficient for 4 meals at approx 40p per portion inc veg.
