I'm confused - Can Anyone help re Loans

I have one loan for with £1200.00 o/s which I am going to repay in the next few days but have just bought a car and need a loan of £6200.00 to finance it. Looked on MSE and found that Barlaycard and Northern Rock have the best rates going. As we have a £9000 limit on our cc that we never use as it's paid of in full each month I presumed we would get offered a pretty good rate. Filled out the online app for Northern rock but the site went funny at the end so am not sure whether or not the app went through. Tried to phone Northern Rock but they do not have an Help Desk that you can phone and were generally unhelpful. In the end I decided to phone Braclaycard and they done a quote while I was on the phone however they said that the best apr was 11.9% which is really high. I am now worried that for some reason our credit score has gone up. I asked at the end if he had done a credit search which he said he had but I did not give permission for this. Now feel in a muddle. need the money but will not pay 11.9%. Don't know whether to pop car on the credit card and look for 0% rate or to apply for another loan, or to get my husband to apply for the loan instead. Can anyone help!!!

The only danger on buying the car on a cc is that the dealer may charge you a surcharge.

Have you tried Cahoot? I would throughly recommend their flexible loan which you can make over payments on in addition to the regular payments and you are only charged on the outstanding amount.

Their rate does depend on your credit score so it may be worth you getting hubby to apply especially if he hasn't had any credit searches done recently.

  • You havent said which number it was but the main switchboard should have passed you to the relevant call centre team. If you havent tried the unsecured loans number its 0845 608 0405 8am-9pm

If that number is no good, send me a pm, I work for NR I'll see if I can get a different number that might be of more use to you if you like.

Hi that is one ot the numbers that I tried , I tried a 0191 number first and then a 0870 then the number you quoted but felt like a was pulling my hair out by then. I have no idea if they have got a note of my loan as I put the application online then is seemed to disappear at the end???
  • I dont know what happens in the loans department.... try that number again if they are unhelpful ask to speak to someone who knows what they are talking about

Phoned Northern Rock again, they still could not find my application also would not pass me through to anyone else. Not impressed. I have totally given up on them, am taking loans with LLoyds tsb instead.
  • Seems a bit odd that they wouldnt try to arrange a loan with you while you were on the phone, ah well

They offered to get someone to call me back to give me a quote over the phone but I didn't want another credit check done and felt that I did not want to have to apply twice with the same company. Lloyds have offered me 5.9% fixed as a staff member of a linked company so am just as well off and the money will be available as soon as loan approved,
