We haven't yet appointed one, the mortgage adviser said to come back to them when an offer had been accepted for us to then appoint a solicitor. I've felt at a disadvantage for this but not even sure where to start sourcing a solicitor.0

Ok, maybe that's part of the problem. You should really get a solicitor on board before you start looking at making offers.0
