In the text above it states:

Tis the season of giving, receiving – and wasting; and in a nation already throwing 33.1 million tonnes of waste away each year, including millions of tonnes over Christmas..

so I assume 7 million tonnes is the answer x

I thought that too but it says 'waste' and I took that to mean plastic, textiles etc, which would mean 7 million tonnes of food at Christmas time would be excessive (well, to me it is).
I had a quick Google and couldn't find a definitive answer.
I'm not entering this one anyway so best if people DYOR

The Big Issue tells us that 270,000 tonnes of food goes to waste each year - so that suggests 7000 tonnes at Christmas is the only likely answer
I need to think of something new here...
