Xmas on my own

Due to having no family and friends living too far away, I will be doing Xmas on my own. I did it last year and it was a disaster, so determined to make it better this year. I've got my head around it emotionally "should be with family at this time of year" kind of stuff, but i need some idea's of food . I'm not the greatest cook in the world, but I do want to make it special. Doing a roast for one is a lot of effort, I tried it last year. Any idea's would be greatfully received

  • I think since you can choose anything you like, it should be about what you enjoy best and work from there. It doesn't have to be traditional. What are your favourite foods? And what are you good at cooking?
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

Get one of those turkey joints in the foil trays. They take about 45 minutes to cook (can't go wrong). For the rest, buy frozen and don't feel any guilt!
Should be able to knock up the whole dinner in under an hour (most of which would be spent on the sofa watching TV with your hand in the sweety tin anyway)

I'd also get a couple of those dinky individual xmas puds in, just in case I could face that - and a packet of custard.

No point knocking yourself out with a lot of cooking for one. There's some super frozen parsnips, spuds - and all the rest of the veggies you need.
  • I agree with Gingham Ribbon, it should be about what you would enjoy the most and you can cook easily. Make the day all about you and what you enjoy

I'm with Gingham Robin, treat yourself to what you like. Marks and Spencer ready made food is more expensive but better quality than most and I'd be tempted to splash out on Christmas day.

Have exactly what you want, because you can. Have what you usually think of a bit extravagant or silly if it suits you. My son and I had turkey pizza last year as there were only the 2 of us. After 30 years of cooking Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, for family and inlaws it was a blissful relief.
  • I agree spoil yourself.
It is nice if you can be with family and freinds at Christmas but for so many people that is not possible.I object to all the forced jolly, happy ,perfect ,Christmas images. It causes a lot of stress and feelings of failure for some if its not perfect. We do relaxed in our house and plan a NICE day not a perfect one.
I had a number of Christmases on my own went somthing like this:-
Christmas eve service in local church (best xmas service) dont do this now OH prefers Christmas morning service.
Hot drink and chocies in bed with a good book/film on tv.i sometimes could read till 3am (joy, cant do that now:rolleyes: ).Sleep and wake up naturaly no clocks.
Nice brekkie anything from dippy eggs with soldiers, butterd crumpets or pankakes.
Still in night clothes phone freinds & family to wish Happy Christmas.Unplug phone;)
Unwrap pressies even the ones I had bought myself as extra treats.
Christmas lunch could be anything curry, stir fry, stake and trimmings (1st Christmas it was a 10lb turkey ,net of sprouts and hundreds of satsumas:o I was 16 & had no idea how many a turky would feed:o after 3 days of turkey, sprouts & satsumas I had lost about 1/2 a stone:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: still avoid turkey if I can).Followed by some nice ice cream or strawberrys.
Settle down to watch tv or read my new books chocs to hand.
6pm ish.Run a nice bath and have a long soak in bubble bath.
7.30 ish plug phone back in.
Something light for supper poss just cheese and crackers but a special one I normally would think a bit indulgent just for me.
More telly and bed were I would read to my harts content.:D
Plan a restful treat for yourself do as little or as much as you want but relax and take time to spoil you.:T
Some of the best lessons we ever learn,we learn from our mistakes and failures.the error of the past is the success and wisdom of the future. :j
  • Not only should you make this day all about you, but make it a pampering one too! Christmas is so expensive and stressful for most people, who have to deal with squabbling families, complaining in-laws, preparing loads of food etc so at least you'll be having a cheaper and more stress-free day already.

As well as preparing your favourite meal, why don't you prepare a gorgeous bubble bath, stock up on candles, bath salts, fun books to read etc. Then spend the day in your bath robe, painting your toenails, putting on a facemask, blowdrying your hair and just have a really luxurious and indulgent day.

You could make a list of little things you've always wanted to do but never had time for, like baking biscuits, or reading a particular book/watching a particular movie and just prepare it all for the day so you can do it then :)

I know it must be hard but try and turn it round and just remember that there are plenty of people who are probably wishing for a much quieter christmas anyway!!!
  • Have a really nice day. As the others have said, eat, drink and do exactly what you want. No housework whatever. BTW, unplugging the phone after your Christmas calls is a great idea. Saves you having interruptions so you can concentrate on having a great day. Spoil yourself. Many people would swap their Christmas day for your one.
