Question about 'sharing' on Facebook

When I 'share' an FB comp, do I need to share it to my public timeline?
At the moment I only share with my friends and my timeline is set to private. I was worried if my profile was full of competition spam might get disqualified
Worried I've been wasting my efforts all this time!

Ignoring that a "share" shouldn't be asked for in the first place - A company would generally want "share" to been seen by everyone and if they check the timeline of a "winner" and cannot see it they might well pick another.0

From what I understand, competitions shouldn't be forcing you to share posts in order to enter (although FB terms change often so I can't be sure).
But unless you share it publicly, the page can't see that you've shared it, so you would need to do it publicly

Well, I had a look through my FB alerts... Of the two recently finished competitions that asked for a share, one winner had publicly shared the post and the other had not. I do notice the share count does go up when I do a private share, so it depends if the organiser can see a list of people who shared.
I think the easiest answer for me is to share publicly and then share a couple of funny pictures for every competition I share, so it looks like I use FB for something other than just competitions

Another option is to create your own public group, and share it there. The share will be public but there will be no spam so to speak on your timeline
