Having recently been housebound for nearly 2 weeks due to illness I am thinking of what I should have in my store cupboard.
To get some idea I was wondering what others have in their store cupboard. I am looking for things to cover events such as illness, bad weather and even our uncertain political future when there might be a hicup in supplies/deliveries. Thanks

I like to keep tins of things like various beans, tomatoes, tuna, cooked meats etc. Also dried foods like rice, pasta, couscous, etc.
I also like to keep meat, fish & veg in the freezer as well as extra portions of food I've previously cooked as ready meals which just need a carb of some sort added to it.

I have a 'corner shop' in my (integrated) garage.
Rice, pasta, tuna, beans, tomatoes, soup, corned beef, porridge.
Home cooked meals in the freezer - shepherds pie bases, chilli, bolognaise, home cooked mashed potato, swede, carrot, turnip to add to pie bases.
Various uncooked mince (beef, turkey etc), uncooked beef, chicken.
Home frozen veg - beans, cabbage, carrots, cauli.
Stock of frozen bread & bread rolls for toast/sandwiches.
And wine.
Lots of wine.
Ditto gin.0 -
I've just looked..
Tins, tomatoes, various beans, tuna
Dried pulses, pastas, rices, oats, flours including bread flour & yeast, dried milk and stock, tea leaves and coffee beans
Freezer is for meat and some veg, but if the power goes out I will pressure can it on the camping stove.
Sterilisation tablets are suitable for water if there is a problem
I sound like a prepper0 -
Nothing wrong with being a prepper.
Offhand, OP, run an eye over your usual shopping & think, if it was dodgy underfoot, "would I still try to go out & resupply on this?"
For everything you think Yes, or probably, then it's worth having a couple of extras so you can avoid that single trip & that possible slip & fall & limb in plaster.
After a bout of norovirus, we bought much more loo-roll & some more plastic cooking bowls, as well as restoring the cupboards.
It also means that if the Mormons come a knocking you can have a really useful chat with them, not about your immortal soul (unless you so wish) but about canny ways of food storage. Their faith requires them to have a full three months of food & drink (& water) to hand, so duly plied with the offer of caffeine-free herbal tea, or water, or milk, you can learn a lot of useful stuff, in the comfort of your own home.0 -
that's very interesting about the Mormons will have to pursue some to ask about that

My "always in, in case" tends to be the likes of baked beans and baked beans with sausages in .... tins of meatballs in tomato sauce, tins of chunky soups .... part-baked baguettes/rolls .... tins of rice pudding and tins of fruit. Also packets of instant custard.
I've always got a bag of basmati in (because 1Kg usually lasts over a year) and a pack of spaghetti (500g usually lasts 2-3 years) ... and instant mash.
With that lot I could eat while ill .... or if snowed in or something.
I've always got "the usual" of flour x2, mixed/dried fruit of some sort, margarine in the fridge, herbs/spices.... and other tins of veg/tomatoes... other assorted dried pastas, angel delights, jelly cubes, etc and loads more baked beans.... I can always knock something up0 -

Ours is full of - tins (tomatoes, kidney beans, butter beans, baked beans, soups, red salmon, ravioli, pineapples, hot dog sausages etc), dried pasta, rice, pulses etc, passata, various purees, flour, sugar, cereals, jams, snacks, bottled water, hot chocolate, ribena, olives, pickled onions, pickles, mustards, garlic mayo, various cooking oils, dry dog food/dog treats.
Don't really keep coffee or tea - think there's some in the back of the larder somewhere for a) visiting trades people and b) to use in the KitchenAid machine we bought for when DS & his GF visit- as neither of us drink them. No milk in the house either. Usually have lots of eggs but used the last six yesterday so need to restock tomorrow.
The freezer is virtually empty right now as we're only just getting the new kitchen into a useable state so no batch cooking done since buying this house ten months ago. Think there's some sweetcorn niblets and peas in there. Don't like frozen chips or freezing bread so make our own chips and buy mainly fresh bread, although we do have a few packs of part-baked rolls/baguettes in the larder. Plan to buy a bread machine asap....
