well maybe reaidng too much into OP's username but medihv satarts with medi - so does anyone know what the NHS / healthcare requirements are
at OPs stated salary range (Seargent?) the NHS equivalent is a Sister or charge nurse (if I interpret the tables correctly) so as a seargent I would expect leadership and organisation skills to be way more important than GCSEsI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

Does the OU degree require you to have certain GCSE grades that you don't have? I would only consider resorting maths and English is you got below a C grade. It could be a good way to get into the mindset of studying if it's been a while.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0

People don't generally resit their GCSEs or A levels if they want to study at uni as mature students. There are other options such as Access Courses. I did one at my local college years ago before going to uni. I had A Levels but they were old and a bit rubbish! Lots of people on the course had no qualifications at all. Some had to do some extra stuff on maths and english.
I just had a look at the link below on the Open University site - guessing at your answers from what you said - and they recommend doing one of their access modules.

If you feel you would be more comfortable being able to put GCSEs on your CV, or if you think that having them would give you a certain level of confidence, then go for it. But if it's just a case of thinking you 'ought' to have them before doing a degree, then there's no need - as others have said, the OU is very good at providing access/intro courses to get you up to speed. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

I would take some one with a military career without gcses any day. My company actively encourages ex forces recruitment. Your gcse results would be of no relevance at all.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0

Your GCSEs are most likely to be an issue if a recruiting company use computerised screening to weed out applications rather than a human thinking about things. As mentioned above, English and Maths at grade C are the most likely ones to be needed. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Maybe, however OP is earning 36k currently in the Army and the Army isn't simply about running around with a rifle (especially not with that wage!).xapprenticex wrote: »i think there are other options than GCSE, imo, in your position i'd learn a trade. Electricians, Gas people, even Locksmiths etc. You get to move about too which is something im sure an army person would like
They probably have leadership skills or even specialised skills which would put any university graduate in the last 5 years to shame...
OP, what skills do you have?0 -

Depending on what course you're doing, you may also have the chance to resit GSCEs whilst you're doing your degree. I attended a uni that did a lot of teacher training courses - I know that students on the Primary teaching course had to sit/resit GCSEs in English, Maths and Science if they didn't already have them at a C grade (or whatever the modern equivalent is!) I think for teaching they couldn't pass their degree if they didn't get the GCSEs they needed. However that was a couple of years ago so things may have moved on since then.0
