  • That is why you need to open another bank account; to cover your backside in case everything goes pear-shaped. You need all your money to go toward rent and food. Your debts can wait. It is all about setting your priorities I think. :)

Have you registered for welfare benefits yet? How is the job hunting going?
I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

    I love my job

Having a second bank account is always wise any how. It helps with budgeting.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

So I am officially out of money. I'm at the very end of my overdraft and I'm buying food on my credit card which now has a ~£600 on it (and I don't even know how I'm gonna pay next month's rent).

I finally have an appointment with the Jobcentre for early next week. Job-wise I'm still speaking to recruitment firms but they're so bad at replying to emails.
  • Are there any temp agencies near you where you go into in person? Have a face to face chat rather than doing things by email? I find you get better results face to face as you can ask about a lot of vacancies and take anything that is offered. Sorry if you have already done this.

Can you try selling unwanted things via Facebook sites or Gumtree? Something that will give you cash quickly? Ebay can take longer.

Stop emailing them go in and ask for any immediate start jobs available. When I lost my job i did just that and was working within 2 days ok the job was rubbish and minimum wage but it covered the bills until I found a decent job.

recruitment firms usually have physical premises, going in person will net you a faster response/result.
Did you sign on? Did you apply for benefits or housing benefits? Have you sold everything you can sell?

  • Might also be worth popping into places - bars, restaurants, supermarkets etc. - in person and asking if they have any vacancies. Two people I know got work by doing that recently - one in a decent bar that offered a lot of shifts because of serious illness of a staff member, and another who got a full time job in big supermarket. In both instances tided them over and paid essential bills until other issues sorted out.

its coming up to Christmas, a lot of stores & bars need temporary staff, visit the job centre site
Tallyhoh! Stopped Smoking October 2000. Saved £29382.50 so far!
  • Finally got a job. My total credit card debt is around £3500 across both cards, but I held out for job that was more of a step up career-wise as opposed to just taking one in a bar/supermarket. Perhaps a little bit irresponsible looking back.

With the pay increase, I should hopefully have this debt paid in <6 months.

    All the best everyone!

Well done on getting the job you wanted. With some control and hard work you should be able to get your debt sorted out and move on from this. Good luck.
