Men's suits

Greetings,

I moved to London from Helsinki (Finland) about 2 months ago. I asked for advice here in the forums concerning an inexpensive gym, and the people were wonderful. The only problem is that this city is too expensive for anyone to find something as affordable as 54 euros per 4 months, like back in Helsinki! :D But it pays off, so it's cool. :)

So anyway, I am asking for advice on where to buy men's suits here in London, or even online. A street shop would be better, though, coz I forgot my sizes! :)

Brand names do not concern me that much, as long as the suits will fit properly and look presentable. But if I will only get a proper fitting look and presentability in brand names, then I may consider paying more for them--within reason.

Thanks a lot for anyone taking the time to give tips, directions, and advice.

lxdirect had a very reasonable suit recently (I bought one for hubby) for £39.99

go to: http://www.lxdirect.com and put AE2789 in the search box at the top

Its not designer for that price but I think it fits well and is the business.

Also a few days ago someone mentioned that Asdas were doing suits for around the £40 mark, so it might be worth checking them out too.

M&S have a suit for £79 here no idea if it's good value or not as being a girl I've never really investigated the price of them , but M&S are particularly good for exchanges and refunds if you are not happy with the fit.
  • Hi,

Be careful of buying cheap suits, in the long run, you will have to replace them more often than a good well made "expensive" suit. Make sure anything you get has a proper linning etc.

I find Moss brothers YSL suits at £200 each are best value for money. You can get cheaper BUT in 12 months, these will look tacky and need to be replaced!

Other options are Pierre cardin...I have also had some made when I was last in Bangkok
  • Head out to one of the outlet malls, as you can often pick up designer suits at bargain prices. Bicester should be quite convenient for London; https://www.bicester-village.co.uk, and they have Jaeger, Ralph Lauren etc.

Hi, this may well NOT be what you are after, but here's what I do:

I always get my suits from the Winchester branch of Gieves and Hawkes (I grew up there). I know its infinitely more expensive than the ones listed above, but... If you get put on their mailing list, you get sent a 10% discount voucher thing every so often, and if you combine this with their sales where suits are 50% off, you can get a really fantastic suit for 60% off, which means its not much more than a high-street shop price. Obviously you'll need to go along and get it all measured etc (alterations are not discounted, so if you are shaped like the hunchback of notre-dame, this may not be cost effective...), and if you want to do the above, you obviously have to wait for their sales. But it works for me. The suits have always been great, and their service is too - highly recommended for VALUE - which I accept is not the same as COST... (You said you'd be prepared to pay for something decent, and you get a lot for your money - I constantly get comments about being well-dressed (shame the face doesn't match the suit! :) ).

You'll find them on Saville Row if you are in London (No. 1 I think). Hope that helps, Al.

It is worth looking in charity shops, I've bought my DH a few nice ones there.

If you get them as separates, eg in Debenhams, and you are wearing the suit every day, it is definitely worth buying two pairs of trousers for every jacket. The trousers will wear out faster than the jackets!
