E: 16/04 Woodland Dæmon Competition 16yrs & under
Options
To celebrate the publication of La Belle Sauvage - the first book in
Philip Pullman's new trilogy The Book of Dust - we've teamed up
with the award-winning author to bring you a fantastic
competition.
Dæmons are an important part of Philip's books. Everyone has one
- it is part of you and has the form of an animal. So we'd like you
to tell us about yours!
Just draw a picture of your woodland dæmon and enter it into our
competition below.
Start by thinking about the type of animal your dæmon might be.
Is it mischievous, inquisitive... a little bit naughty? Does it like to
climb trees, play with friends or explore new places? Is it always
on the go, dashing from one place to another, or does it prefer to
take things slowly?
The prize
The winner will be hand-picked by Philip Pullman himself, who will
bring your woodland dæmon to life and sign it!
How to enter
Draw your woodland dæmon, give it a name, and tell us why you
chose it. Then ask a grown-up to send it to us with your name,
age and address.
You can enter online, by email
naturedetectives@woodlandtrust.org.uk, or by post:

What is a dæmon?
Here is Philip Pullman's description of a dæmon in his own words:
"The existence of dæmons is one of the defining features of my
literary world. They are a character’s animal counterpart that helps
define them as a person, and could be just about anything – from
a mischievous pine marten to a grand osprey.
Your dæmon is part of you, but he or she has the form of an
animal who goes with you everywhere. You are so close that
you’re really one being. Boys usually have female dæmons, and
girls usually have male ones, but not always. Your dæmon can’t go
very far away from you, because it hurts a lot to be separated
from them; but you can read each other’s thoughts, and share
your feelings, and know everything about each other. Dæmons are
the closest companions that you could ever have."
Good luck!
