Does anyone know if it is possible to connect an ipod or a computer to a hifi and use it as a dukebox with all my MP3 files.
The ipod has a USB lead but do any Hifi's have USB ports
Will i have to run it all through my computer
Any advice would be great

I take it an iPod also has a headphone socket. I'd have thought that would be sufficient for getting the audio signal out of it and into a hi-fi. PC sound cards should also have an audio out socket which can be used to achieve the same thing. The USB lead is presumably for getting music onto the iPod rather than the other way around. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Yes, the ipod has a mini headphone jack at the top of it.
The USB connection is used for transfering the music from computer onto the ipod
Does that then mean that any hifi with an audio in connection can be used along with and audio out lead ??

Matt,
You will need to check what audio inputs your hi-fi actually has. Most come with an auxillary phono (colour coded as red and white or red and black)input that allows you to add an extra piece of equipment (like a TV or DVD player) to your system.
Once you have identified your input you will need a mini jack to whatever your input is and hey presto!!
Hope this helps

My Archos multimedia gizmo came with a lead as mentioned above, so it goes from audio out on the player and into the red & white sockets on the back of the mini-stereo. On our hi-fi, it goes into 2 of the audio in sockets.0 -
when i got my ipod from the us apple website (the joys of having american relatives) i ordered the extra fm transmitter which was 19 dollars plus sales tax (about 15 qiud in the end) and its one of the best devices ever invented. unfortunately its illegal in the uk, so buy and use at your own risk, although i doubt youll need to hire johnny cochran. basically ist a device that plugs into any normal headphone jack, and broadcasts whatever youre listening to on a choice of 4 different fm frequencies. so basically i get into my car, set the radio to 88.3 fm, and have the ipod playing through the car stereo! the transmitter has a range of about 5 meters or so i think. this could be a way of putting the ipod through the hifi?? you can get the transmitters off various people on ebay, just search for ipod accessories and see what you find!!

I have basically the same question but the other way round. I'm thinking of buying an ipod but want to know whether it's possible to connect my CD player to it so I can copy all my CDs onto the iPod?
Is this possible or will I have to download all the music I want to play in MP3 format?
Cheers for any advice...0 -
You would use iTunes to convert your existing cd's into mp3/AAC format and transfer them to the iPod, it takes care of the entire procedure.
It's also the gateway to the iTunes music store if you want to buy music online.

Some devices ( IRiver for example) will allow inline encoding also , but don't think Ipod does.
Found a old cable in garage that worked great - from earphone socket to Hifi AUXAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
