hi there, since last tuesday i have been un able to eat solid foods due to an issue with my salivary glands, i am having an mri tomo and then it look slike surgery next saturday (25th nov)

i have been doing ok on milkshakes and smoothies, soups and mashed potato up until now but as this looks like ill be having to carry on with mush for a few more weeks i could do with some ideas of what tastes half decent when its been blended up. Fingers crossed ill be healed by xmas as i do love my mums roast spuds!!

i can't eat dairy or gluten which doesn't help and it needs to be cold or luke warm, as hot hurts too, gosh im soooo lucky!

i have a vitamix, nutri bullet, steamer and electric pressure cooker that can all be put to good use

thanks x

Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.

I see some of those contain dairy- eg custard. Presumably you can use soya, almond or whatever milk instead

Slightly melted sorbet? I'm guessing frozen will be too cold

Mashed potato could be colcannon? with spring onion and cabbage

Different taste add a touch of miso paste to savory things. (Umami flavours)

  • yeah i'm going to try and make a few bits with milk alternatives
hadn't thought about something like colcannon, i could dice the cabbage and maybe some other veg small enough so i don't have to chew and that would help with fibre and nutrients

thinking maybe i should just go down the local old peoples home and see waht meals they serve up lol

When grandad lost his dentures we ground most things up for him. Meatballs or other things made with mince were fairly easy to do with a dash of extra hot water. Mashed potato, mushy peas, egg based things. But not grinding the whole meal up together, several separate little pots!
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Those individual frozen fish portions blended with peas and mashed veg were great when I was in your situation (though I didn't have the food intolerances). Just ignore any suggestions for baby food!
  • dunno how blended stuff needs to be, but after a rugby incedent with a busted jaw, I discovered that u can eat fish fingers (if cooked in a baking tray school dinner stylee so they are a bit soft) by mushing them against the roof of your mouth.
angel delight and jelly ( dunno if this is dairy friendly, or can be made it
    sheperds pie
super noodles can be mushed as per fish fingers.
biscuits work if they have been pre dunked ( digestives, for gods sake don't try hobnobs)
    chilli and rice are good
that little pasta that looks like rice, with a bolognaise
    saving for more holidays

You say that you cannot eat dairy and yet you have managed milkshakes? Why do you have problems with the dairy? Is is the lactose or are you allergic to dairy protein?

My concern would be getting sufficient protein with what you are eating because it will be needed for repair and healing.

Your body will need the essential amino acids such as Valine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Lysine, Tryptophan, Histidine, Threonine, Phenylalanine, Methionine/cysteine. Adding some Vitamin C would be helpful too because it is essential for producing collagen and repair. Some others which can be helpful are Ornithine and Glycine which are also important for repair, can be made by the body but having some does help. Glycine is used more than any other amino acid for collagen production plus helps to reduce wrinkles too.

The collagen amino acids can be obtained from boiling organic animal bones and joints in a pressure cooker. Some people use fish heads and pig trotters but I will not use those.

Maybe some blended fish or meat. Throw some veg in too.

Frozen food home delivery companies like Wiltshire Farm Foods do a large range of pureed meals, using moulds ( eg pile of peas, carrots, steaks) to make them look more appealing.
