Had the same problem this morning, saying Error 404. Tried going in via my phone instead of computer and said it was down for maintenance. hopefully it'll be back up and running soon.

I would not even attempt a 2017 tax return for another week. The HMRC database is rubbish, quite often snarls up early returns and this year we have to add in to the mix known glitches they have not bothered to fix which result in errors of over £1,000 in tax liability for some high earners.

So as a professional accountant with 20 early tax returns for refunds to file which could go right now, there is no way I will mess around filing them until I am sure the database is running properly.

Today is the start of the tax year there are always system problems due to the updates. I'd leave it a week.

Same here keep getting error message 404. I have been completing tax returns for the last 10 years too! Always on the 6th.

You've been very lucky, both of you. I've had clients submitting their own returns on 6th where the submission have been totally lost by the system. Luckily they were not using HMRC software so were able to fight the fines when they arrived.

As above, this is not a "normal" year as HMRC have already admitted they have butchered the tax calculation algorithm. They usually muck it up to some extent, but not so badly that they feel the need to admit to it.

Managed to do my return, but am a bit unsure about the new "bank interest" rules... I thought the first £1000/£500 of interest was tax free, but the HMRC calculation is showing it affecting my tax owed..

Or should I not have entered any uk bank interest below the £1000/£500 mark?
