Is It Worth Entering Competitions If You've Got A Smart Postcode?

Newbie on this forum so not sure I'm on the right thread but I'm wondering if it's worth entering competitions if you've got a 'smart' postcode?
The reason I ask is I know someone who, some years ago, worked for a company which ran a children's competition. When the comp ended she was told by her boss to choose a winner. When she asked how she should do it was told 'however you like' so she went through the entries and picked an entry with a postcode in a deprived area thinking, hopefully the prize would go to a child who perhaps didn't have much. It was thoughtful and kind but a bit tough on all the other kids from better areas who didn't really stand a chance and after all you've no way of knowing circumstances from an address. And that's my point, if you've got a 'smart' postcode do you stand a chance? Ours is perceived as 'stockbroker belt' but we're definitely in the 'broke' part). I've entered quite a few comps over the years and never won a thing. I'd like to do more but no point wasting my time if I've got no chance to start with. Are winners picked as randomly as we think? Be interested to know what you all think.

I live in a nice middle class area and have won loads of competitions but seven years ago I lived in Dagenham and still won loads of comps. Actually I have won two holidays to Las Vegas once living in Dagenham and in Brentwood. So for me my postcode has not effected my winning at allCompetitions wins 2010

Thanks, fabwitch. That's encouraging to hear. Nothing to do with putting spells on the organisers, then? :rotfl: (Sorry, cheap joke, couldn't resist it!)0

I'm in an area perceived as posh and wealthy too, but I've won stuff including a holiday. I think they are just picked out randomly

If your not in it, you can't win it!
I live in a normal (ish!) area and I have done ok
I think its just luck of the draw tbh, this question also pops up a lot in relation to "do they pick winners with hotmail email accounts" etc etc
(yes they do by the way!)

I live in Suffolk but my boyfriend lives in London. He enters nearly all the same comps as I do (he doesn't enter the 'female' type things for things like underwear) but he's only won about 10% of the things I've won. He enters postal comps too and I don't and I've still won more than him. Anyone throw some light on why this may be?2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Yes, I'd love to know how winners are picked. Are there any strategies you use to make your entries more likely to win? I used to think my slogans as in 'complete the following sentence'-type comps were no good but haven't entered one of those in years (do they even exist now?) so it's not that. Have been encouraged by the answers to this thread and entered a few comps yesterday. So, here's hoping!

I would _hope_ that entries are picked out randomly! I'm not sure how you'd categorise my area (quite studenty, but to buy here you have to be quite well off), but I've done OK in the last few months. I think you probably stand a better chance with 'complete the sentence' type comps as fewer people will enter. For example, in the Nivea beauty tip competition my entry was to drink plenty of water and always take your makeup off before going to bed - hardly rocket science but netted me a £50 House of Fraser voucher!
Thinking about it - after all the phone in scandals etc I bet that competitions without a skill/subjective element couldn't get away with NOT picking a winner randomly ...latest win: LOTR: Moria - thanks to catz
- I'm moving to Australia in April - will the competitions be any good there?!:rotfl:

Hi Just in response to what Kipper wrote, I use my business email for everything. Its my business so why wouldn't I? Would this make a difference?
It reads 'myfirstname@onewordcompanyname.co.uk'0 -
I use my works email for the comps I enter whilst at work (smack hand!) and I've won with that, as well as with my btinternet home one.
Hopefully, the wins are completely serendipitous (if I've spelt it right)! They definitely make me happy!

Hi Clair
I think you have missed my point, I'm not saying that specific email addresses won't get picked, its just these type of questions (does it matter where you live?, do they pick hotmail/gmail addies as winners?) crop up a lot on the boards and I was just saying that hotmail addies do win
There is no reason why your email address shouldn't be picked as its a business one
Good Luck with the comping
