It's all about effort competitions.

I am perhaps not the best person to give help as I haven't comped for a few years.
What I did learn whilst I was doing it was look for effort based competitions.
I find that people make an unbelievably low effort to photo competitions, they will usually just pick an existing photo but in my second year of uni we won:
£3.2k copy of adobe CS collection, we sold it for 1.8k.
Three windows phones.
£50.00 ticket master tickets.... and on and on.
All things like, "submit a picture that displays your love for windows" - five minute facepainted windows logo on girlfriends face = WIN.
We must have won over 30 or 40 competitions based on telling stories and taking photos. The only difficulty is finding them!
Prizes ranging from a packet of chocolates to the adobe thing it really helped us through uni.

As you say there are not many and even some of those with "effort" are random draws so not really "effort".
On the other hand non-effort comps are plentiful and offer a far bigger range of prizes0 -
Well, after finding this forum I will notify what I find. Being a student back then gave me a lot of time to find them, I was pretty lucky. Good luck for the future, I am starting this hobby up again!0
