    I'm the same.

I asked Capital One for a credit increase and they declined me!!

I'm stuck on £200 which is not worth the toss!!

I waited almost the whole 6 years before applying for anything....you can apply for a second Capital one card...like Luma or Ocean if you need more credit.

So far my only credit card has been with Vanquis, £1750 limit & fancy new card now. I use and pay up monthly, definitely use it less now than in the beginning. I would say best to clean up credit file first then apply.

  • I started with 200 with Aqua, they've Increased it several times in a couple of years, now 4k limit.
Now my br has dropped off my file last month I've got a virgin money card, they gave me 4k straight away.

  • Wow £2,500 is really good for just over 1 year discharged! :)

I don't want that much, but it would be good for car hire - they block £1k+ in the bank!

I guess it's the 'don't realise what you have til it's gone' story - used to think nothing of cashback cards etc, could only dream of that at the moment!

I was discharged in September but Vanquis turned me down for a credit card

I'm the same. Did you have previous debt with them that was written off??

I'm going to try again in January - discharged ~18 months, and I'd then only have a few searches (< 5) during the previous 12 months, and none in the 6 months prior - that would normally be fine for acceptance at even 'mainstream' lenders, so if I don't get it I'd say it's 100% due to past debts. It can't be the BR, as they say they take ex-BR after 12 months.

Aqua are the same with me, and they say they take BR after 18 months. You could try them if you've got nothing else and want to build - Go on their site and look for Aqua start, the most expensive card with tiny limits, but it'll be a good start.

I'm quite stunned too lol. I haven't even finished cleaning my credit files yet - mind you, when I applied (just for the sheer hell of it) the day after discharge I hadn't cleaned any at all. My income is very low too because I care for my parents full time so I'm reliant on income support & carers allowance (diddly squat) .

Capital one were generous with me too and I've got a defaulted(partailly satisfied) debt with them still on file due to IVA. Aqua raised my limit after 6 months, but vanquis haven't adjusted it at all in 18 months.

I have been with Vanquis for two years at a crappy £250 limit. My credit score is high enough now to go for other cards so I applied to Capitol One and got a CC with a £1000 limit right away. I won't cancel the vanquis card because I have heard it may be frowned upon by the credit score people ( So I've heard - I'm not sure though). I won't be using it anymore though.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy crap we dont need!
  • I had an email today from Totally Money about some Aqua 6 months 0% or something like that. NewDay hate me, so I didn't even apply.

Just out of interest, I went through the eligibility checker to see what my chances were for any other cards (e.g. that new Chrome Card issued by Vanquis @ 29.9%). It came back with 5 x Cap 1 cards all pre-approved, and a 90% approval chance for an Ocean Finance card (also issued by Cap1).

I applied for the Cap 1 Platinum (29%) and went through the credit check etc, granted me a 1k limit and setup a direct debit online.

It seems crazy that Aqua et al tell me to jog on, and cap 1 told me to jog on for the secured card just 2/3 months ago - but now I'm pre-approved for 1k!?

I've noticed that MSE checker doesn't appear to check Cap1 cards - so it might be worth looking into the totally money one and seeing if you're pre-approved, then it won't waste a search, for anyone struggling to get approved with Vanquis etc. Not sure if Cap1 have changed their lending criteria (quite dramatically!) or it's because so many of the searches have now dropped off my file.

Not sure if it's scored differently via totally money (who will get a commission etc) vs. via Cap 1 direct - but Cap 1's own eligibility checker said no only a few weeks ago.

I was shocked to get 2x Capital one cards both £1500 limits!
  • Just ran my details through Cap1s own site direct.... says your score is too low for us to give you a card at this time.

Totally money link still showing 5 preapproved and 1 90% from cap1 group. Everything else is between 0 and 30% as expected....

Gets stranger by the minute!! Still no email from them though so I do imagine it'll be declined. But I can't see how they an preapprove AND then do a check and offer a credit limit and setup DD if it's a glitch?!?
