Have you tried talking to your GP? There may be techniques you can learn to help you, such as CBT. Anything you can think of that triggered the anxiety, or has it crept up over time?

  • I think it started when I was ill after I got better I starting worrying about things. Tried antianxiety drug but it just upset my stomach. Never thought about CBT. Would have to see my doctor wouldn't I ?

There are online CBT courses approved for use by the NHS, but seeing your GP would give you someone else to support you and check what other help might be relevant to you.
If you're worried about medication, you don't have to accept it, again that's a conversation you can have with your GP about the pros and cons.

  • Thank you for being so helpful.
  • I've been advised to read a book called Women Who Think Too Much. I think this may be helpful.!

OP I also think you should see your GP, even if it's only so they are aware what's going on for you and if they can they can offer further support. If you find self-help books helpful by all means buy/read them but many seem to leave the half read or find it difficult to take on the advice and suggestions leaving them not that much better off than if they'd not bought or borrowed the book.

Medication is one way to help limit the physical side of what's going on but it's really something that needs to be done along side therapy and trying to change things practically. There is no pill I know of which does all the hard work for you!

It's also worth remembering that sometimes we worry about things we feel we have more control of or a better chance of controlling because what we're running from or trying to avoid thinking about are things we can't control.

Keep a diary, see if you can find a patter in when you worry more and what else is going on for you at the time (eg after an argument or if you feel overwhelmed at work or ...etc) that way you have more information to bring to a session if you do get referred for treatment. It's one thing to know what is happening, it's another thing to make changes and actually change things.

    Hi Princes

I too have been suffering with anxiety,... Worriying about everything so much so that my stomach was in turmoil, and i have been like this for the last 3/4 years( think really since my son was born!), but i have decided enough is enough and this year i'm determind to sort myself out, so i have been doing yoga twice a week since the last couple of weeks, this week will try and go 3 times, and whether it is a coincidence or its actually helping but i'm starting to feel good about myself, i'm not worrying and my stomach( touch wood!) has been much better! I' m sure the deep breathing and the tips they have given to quieten the mind have helpd so much. Try some deep breathing when you have a quiet minute or 2 and see if it helps, it may take a bit of time, but may be worth a go! Xxx
  • CBT is available in my area via various channels, eg online or over the phone and one to one. A GP referral is still needed, though, so I think it'd be worth asking your doctor about what might be available to you. I picked up a few different techniques to try and diffuse some of the anxiety, or distract me from it.

I hope you can find a way to help cope with your anxiety, OP. It's very debilitating.

I used to be Starrystarrynight on MSE, before a log in technical glitch!
  • Look up Bach Flower Remedies, there's quite a few for anxiety.
