I think puddings fell out of favour when things like instant whip, angel delight and arctic roll became available in the shops. All of these things made an almost instant dessert and the frozen things took off big time when home freezers became widely affordable. Certainly when the girls were small so late 1970s/80s you could get little frozen mousses and chocices in packs of a dozen for very little money and the convenience factor has to be put in too. Frozen ready mades were available in the supermarkets from that time on too so lots of folks must have thought them the easiest option and time savers, specially if Mum worked.0

can i also recommend "the dairy book of home cookery" for a cookery bible !! It goes from how to fry an egg to making choux pastry and everything else in between... my current copy is from the 90's when i had my first 'proper' house and its got veggy recipes and microwave timings in it.
(just had a look on t'internet and it seems updated versions are still available!)
it's been a source of inspiration for proper home cooked food for years for meBest headline ever on local paper??
