Many man years ago, my father had a job that was mostly based in Hull. Of course, we didn't live there as it was a dump.

Until about 20 or so years ago I lived in inner London. Large parts of that were a dump. :D

I believe you can't call them dumps now if they have 15 tea rooms / coffee bars / tapas bars within 3.45 minutes of walking distance.

In somewhere like Hull this becomes 15 nail bars/bookies/kebab shops within 800m crawling distance from the pub. It's a different sort of gentrification :D

Think of the plus side! It had the cheapest night club in Britain in the 80s :D

Trog Bar? Broken glass forming delicately blood-red stained snow drifts around couples sat on seats having sex?

    Yes, great place.

Loads of investment going in from Siemens to make wind turbines there too.

Good to see the North becoming a bit less grim. Northern Powerhouse anyone?

Don't believe a word of it, the north is as grim as its every been. ;)

Its bad enough a few of my Londoner mates have discovered they can swap a 2 bed flat for a 5 bed detached victorian villa and only take a small knock in salary.

Like most places there are some fab places oop north and others that need avoiding like the plague.

I was under the impression it was a nightclub called Spiders ?

I remember it being cheap. It might have been renamed or closed since.

Actually, you need the grim places all over, so that the people who live in the nice places often not far away can be continually reminded why they are paying 5 times the price for the same housing.

I think this is why Tower Hamlets was invented *.

(* other depressing places are available)

It's why I find London so confusing.

I live in the East Midlands (or just the North if you're from London) and in my town I know exactly where the Tower Hamlets equivalent is located and it's a distance from the nice places.

In London the nice and nasty places seem to be located in the same places or just a few footsteps away. Even more confusingly some shitholes (where I wouldn't kennel my dog for two weeks) cost as much as a nice 4-bed oop North.

Please for you who live (as I do) up North, keep the story going as to how grim it is up here.

That is the only way we can try and stop a mass exodus of "southerners" up here.

Just for the record I live only 15 mins. by car from one of Britains most cleanest beaches.
25 minutes in another direction is a National park.

And for those that want it only 20 mins from one of Britains best shopping malls.

I can get to my work by public transport in 10 mins. and usually be guaranteed a seat.

Yes it certainly is " grim up North" !

Quite, let's keep them thinking it's grim up here.

Ah yes, the place to go after you got past the first date in Romeo and Juliet's stage.
