London has plenty of green space. Extra housing is purely a matter of choice for people living there. Maybe there is conflicted NIMBYism going on.

It certainly does. I live in zone 4 and can drive 10 minutes and be driving through big green fields and woods. When people want building to happen, it doesn't mean demolishing every bit of this space but I'm pretty sure we could fit in a few million tasteful dwellings and infrastructure without ruining the landscape. And please, allow people to buy the land and build themselves, rather than the big builders soaking the profits and building sterile ugly environments.

The answer is obvious. Build lots more houses with specific focus around London, Reading, Aldershot then.

Clearly people have the income to buy these houses if they are available in volume. Plenty of space around Reading and Aldershot.

They are building 70K - 100K houses around West Yorkshire corridor. Why, if people can't afford them? The demand for the labourers and brickies is down in the capital/SE.

Just started to build almost 4000 houses in Aldershot now, I'd dispute there is plenty of space around Aldershot unless Army give up some more land.

    Interesting report below.

Just reinforces (to me) the press just looking for headlines and not appreciating that its disposable income which matters most not merely top line salary.

The other problem with that news story is that a lot of the higher paid Hull workers live just outside the area covered by Hull City council so they don't show in the figures.

Many man years ago, my father had a job that was mostly based in Hull. Of course, we didn't live there as it was a dump.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

Can't the army go and practise in the middle East and sell off the land?

    Oh, they already do? ;)

Don't think we have many troops in the Middle East at the moment. Problem with army land around Aldershot is that it is Lowland Heath and would be extremely difficult to get planning for. There are plans to build on Pirbright Barracks and the Army have moved out of Bordon, trouble with Bordon is transport links.

Hamish tells us regularly on here we can build on anything. We're just not exploiting it.

Thinking about it with the number of closed shops in town centre they could just redevelop that as houses and flats.
