It's not grim up North!

Loads of investment going in from Siemens to make wind turbines there too.

Good to see the North becoming a bit less grim. Northern Powerhouse anyone?

When I was younger I used to go to the cinema and there was always an ad where a Welsh Choir sang 'made in Wales' over a list of company names and some shots of tourist board scenery. I suspect most if not all are no longer made in Wales....only sayin'
    I think....

At some point in the future, people will look back with fascination with our obsession on living in a specific locality.

The thing we do need is better West-East rail transport.

The "Not The Nine O'Clock News" spoofs of that were superb - "Failed in Wales" and "Made From Whales"

There are many places that better east-west road links are needed too. Virtually the whole country is designed to go north to south, not east to west. Given how entrenched views can be in this country, I'm blaming the War of the Roses.

What the news shows us is flooding.
Of course I know that's not the entire north, I'm just pointing out what is presented to many southerners who don't have much idea of where Appleby/York are on the map, so the general perception would be flooding problems in particular and bad weather in general.

We don't see too many industrial successes on the news, generally failures.

Kabayiri - some people have roots. Many people my age have to look after elderly parents to some degree and many enjoy time with their children and grand children. moving to a area where you have no family and friends sounds awful to me. My friends are not a commodity I can exchange for others up north.

The top of the North Circular goes east-west as does the bottom of the South Circular.

Who on earth would want to go transverse across The North? Surely you'd want to get the heck out of there.

    It's grim up north.

It's crazy. Britain is one of the great manufacturers of the world and has been for centuries.

The North, for all its grimness, is the birthplace of the modern world. Northerners invented industry and the UK remains one of the great industrial powers and one of the great exporters of manufactured goods.
