Butcher's block oil? Or similar?

Hello,

This isn't exactly OS / MSE (unless I ruin my new butchers block and have to buy a new one!) However I thought OSers were the kind of people who could answer my question!

I have a new kitchen island, with a butchers block top which is untreated. I've done a search on the internet and I can find a supplier of special oil for about £5- but P+P is £4! Can anyone tell me where you can buy this stuff, or is there another type of oil you can use?

Many many thanks

  • We have wooden worktops in the kitchen as well - we were advised to use Danish oil, which you can get in B&Q or other DIY places. It is quite expensive, but you only need a tiny bit and it will last for years. We used it to do all our new beams and stair treads and it gives a gorgeous finish.

You could also try boiled linseed oil - I got a little bottle for £2.99 in a local DIY place.

The best thing to do would be ask the supplier of the butchers block - they'll probably know best.

Bet it looks gorgeous though! :D

You'll probably need to do at least 3-4 coats the first time, and then annually to keep it in best condition.

  • Ideally, food grade mineral oil, which you ought to be able to get from a good old-fashioned ironmongers or possibly the pharmacy.

If you are not going to place food directly onto the block, then Danish Oil will do the job - freely available even in B&Q.

Don't use olive or any other kind of vegetable oil as they go rancid. This will generally taint any food that comes into contact with it and possibly just give off an aroma of rancid oil
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
  • Hi,

I have just bought an end grain butchers block as well and was looking for a suitable mineral oil that won't taint the food or go rancid. Did you manage to find one that was readily available without having to pay £4.50 delivery when you searched.

    Regards
