recieved a win that I didn't win

Hi can anyone help please
I received a win yesterday that I didn't win, but it was in my name and to my address
I had won a competition from the company a few weeks before via twitter and received that prize a few weeks ago.
Can anyone tell me what my rights are, can I keep the prize?
I have not contacted the company as of yet

Are you sure that this isn't part of the original prize? Various bits are often sent separately
  • I am one hundred percent sure after a quick google
there was also no delivery note with the parcel
Only my name and address on the front

Are you sure it's not from a different competition? Sometimes wins turn up unannounced.
  • sorry above was me!! I am signed in internet explorer and her on Mozilla, my bad.
  • Ignore above comment, I deleted the reply off her account. I said I never entered the competition, I only enter twitter competitions and my girlfriend enters other ones. I asked her if she entered in my name because we share the same computer and she said she hadn't entered that one either.

I had something similar happen a few years ago.

Someone else's name but my address on the package- a cookery book- and as I'd entered four competitions each with the same prize and all ending within a day or two of one another.

The prize had come from a PO Box address so I had no way to know which competition it had come from.

It was a lovely book, but it turned out to have a lot of recipes, that would be impractical with the food allergy and intolerances of family members. So I put it into a raffle that raised funds for a specific group.

It may be that there were two prizes and the other person received one with my name and their address...
  • Someone posted not too long ago about this happening to them. They did the right thing and contacted the company about it and the company requested that they send it back. Then started a long winded process about how it's getting sent back, who is paying for it, money up front or claim back, waiting in for collection vs taking it out to a post office.

Seemed like a LOT of hassle for trying to do the right thing.

I'd put it in a cupboard for a bit (if it isn't perishable). If the company don't contact to ask for it within a reasonable timeframe (month or 2?) i'd be keeping it.

    Up to you though.

Already seems like to much hassle, I had to travel 20 miles to my nearest post office to collect it as I wasn't in at the time. I also posted this on consumer rights board and there replies weren't as chilled as this one, they said it's not unsolicited goods but a genuine mistake, so I think I will contact the company and let them know, and then they can sort it out without me going out my way for them, I hope.
  • My girlfriend has realised that she DID enter the competition, but not in my name or with my email, does that make a difference? Same address? Bizarre.
