Where would you buy if you were a bit of a nomad?

I have been tossing around with the idea that I need to buy something in London and don’t really know what to do! Both my partner and I are nomadic in nature, we absolutely love to explore the world and have been moving around countries for decades, luckily we both have jobs that allow us to do so, speak languages so integrating makes it easier. No plan for kids, dependants, nothing.

I could afford something in London, I have enough deposit and possibly even the criteria for a mortgage (in principle at least), though I am wondering if it’d make sense [financially] for me to buy something in London. we haven’t really got a plan for how long we would like to stay, we have no restrictions either so it’s up to us. We could always go back home or somewhere else.

I already own a property in a country I consider ‘home’, it’s mortgage free, I have full right to stay there but because I am here I rent it out (and yielding way better than anything in London and most of UK). I could buy something else somewhere else where we might retire in few decades… rent is barely 20% of our income and I manage to save 50% of my net income whilst contributing to my UK pension (private).

With the current London house-prices, what would you do? Genuine advice please….

Do you work in London? Do you need to be there, or you just enjoy the lifestyle? It's hard to tell what advice you want from us really.
  • Romania. You can a 20 bed hotel for about 3 quid

Being able to "afford something in London" could mean you might be able to buy a 1 bed crackden in thamesmead for £125k on a help to buy mortgage with a 5% deposit, or a 6 bed Chelsea townhouse for £15m with a 75% deposit.

You might as well ask us to advise you what sort of ice cream you like.

I'd buy a caravan. Or a winnebago. Depending on the budget :)

Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.
  • If I was a bit of a nomad, I would not buy a house. I'd invest the money and rent a succession of interesting places with the proceeds.

You're a bit bitter! You'd be surprised how many people live in the capital and not necessarily in a crackden! There's a lot in between.

Thank you - but I don't think your opinion would matter much.

I don't have those desires for large places, I like compact ones... though I'd like to live in Romania for a short stint, I think it would be interesting!

But you haven't given any information for people to give a valid opinion. What does "I could afford something in London" mean?

Oh and I value chewmylegoff's opinion far more than someone who requires specific opinions/advice without giving any specific details.;)
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

OK, let:s try this a bit differently. What is your budget (approx), and what are your priorities?. How many bedrooms do you need?, do you want to be central or would you be happy somewhere further out with good transport links?. Do you want the nicest area you can afford now, or somewhere with potential to improve?. Is there anything in particular you want fromThe property (such as a garden), or the area (such as good parks).

The more info that is provided, the more meaningful any suggestions will be. Otherwise, people are effectively just picking bits of London they like, and that probably won't help you much.
