Can anyone help? I have rang my bank today re our spiralling overdraft, we are currently 600 pounds over our agreed limit and are receiving nasty letters about it. I have done a personal budget plan from National Debtline and have rang the bank to ask if I can loose my overdraft, turn it in to some sort of loan and pay it back monthly. They are saying no we cant have a loan because...... wait for it!! .......... our credit score is naff ( Fancy that!!!) so can we please just pay off the overdraft today. EEEkk I not sure which part of "we have no money" they dont get. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for what we can do? I not sure where to go from here. I was under the misguided impression that if we tried to come to some arrangement that would be better than not doing anything!!! But they have to meet us half way or what else can we do? Thanks.

The first thing I would do is open a basic account with another bank. Move your wages, DD's and SO's to that account. Then set up a DD to pay off the overdraft of the old account.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0

hi there wallet, if they are refusing to play ball and you have offered to make regular payments then i would go to the citizens advice bureau, they give free advice and may phone the bank on your behalf - its surprising how they pay more attention to someone other than yourself!! i was in the same situation with hsbc, and the cab sorted it, hope this helps xxxLBM 29/07/ 07

I'm with the Co-Op bank and was £180 over my agreed overdraft limit. They called me a couple of days ago (naturally after having thrown their charges on), and agreed to extend my overdraft for just one month to cover my charges.
But my credit rating is awful aswell so I can't understand why your bank isn't helping!Onwards and Upwards! :rolleyes:0

I've just applied for a First Direct bank account, but suspect i'll get refused due to poor credit history. Any recommendations?
I'm already with Halifax & Smile, which rules out all accounts to do with HBOS & Co-Op!Debts at 02/02/20: c£225,000 inc CCs of <£1000 repaid in full monthlyDebts at 14/07/10: £278,091 inc £24k unenforceable and £16k consumer debt. I was hoping to get another bank account...but I'm not sure it will go through! It's such a good idea to pay your wages into a different account and put your bills in a different one! Whatevers left is your budget for the month.
If you apply for an account, and get turned down, is it reflected in your credit score??Onwards and Upwards! :rolleyes:0

If you just want a basic bank account (ie no credit facilities) there is a list on the bankruptcy board I believe.Making my money go further with MSE :j

Yeah, I think it does go on your credit score although I not an expert so dont just take my word for it. I currently bank with Nat West and so that rules out any attempt for account with RBS so I thought maybe Alliance and Leicester or maybe TSB? I dont know. I think they all bad really and none of them are really interested in personal circumstances they just want to make it as easy as possible to get into debt cos thats where all their money comes from, I think at the moment I am currently paying all of Nat Wests Staff's wages in charges!!! I bet all if all posters on this site put together all their bank charges we could probably fund a third world country!! Any way the rant has finished!!
