Partner's debt and Bailiffs

Hi I am looking for some good advice, hoping you clever folks can help me!
Try to narrow down a long story, OH has a history of horrendous money management and is in debt.
He moved in with me in March, he came with nothing bar a few clothes and sentimental items and some musical equipment he uses as he’s a musician.
He has a CCJ from many years before I met him that he is still paying off, although he hasn’t registered as living at my address they found him as he registered his car (worth about £650) with the DVLA here.
Anyway I found him in tears the other week as he was on the phone which he handed to me, it was the bailiff telling him they were coming around unless he paid up the full amount which he hasn’t got. I said that the items in my house belonged to myself and my grown up children who live with me, he said I had to find receipts to prove it for everything, which is pretty near impossible, we’ve been here for many years and don’t have receipts for everything.
This is the one I’m most worried about being a CCJ but there’s more..
He owes his ex flatmate some money and he’s threatening him and says he will give my address to other bailiffs who have come around looking for him ( for Parking fine and previous landlord dispute).
I really don’t want bailiffs and debt collectors around here, my son and daughter are both saving up for a mortgage deposit and I don’t want the house blacklisted for their sake, I’m not worried for myself as I never borrow under any circumstances, but also I don’t want our hard earned stuff taken by them.
Happy to answer any questions as I’ve tried to compact the story, no lectures please, throwing him out with his dog on the streets is not something I feel comfortable doing.
Really need some advice as to how I can prove the household belongings are mine, thanks .

They'll visit there's nothing you can do to stop that.

Your house/address whatever will NOT be blacklisted. You and your adult children can still get loans/credit cards. This will not affect you.

Your stuff will not be taken...it's a bluff to get him to pay. Do NOT let them in.

We've all had some troubles with debt it's fine nothing to worry about.

Oh dear, sounds a right old mess, there's no such thing as a "credit blacklist" though, his, or anyone else's debt will not affect you or your family's ability to obtain credit, and, as I've posted earlier today in another thread, they don't really want to be taking second hand goods either, as they rarely fetch enough money to clear the debt, its as the other poster said, just another way to get you to pay up.

He should try to sort out all his debts though, if only for your piece of mind, get him to contact Stepchange, there a free debt charity, who will be able to advise a way out of this for him.

  • Thanks both, that does put my mind at rest a bit.

So it won't affect my children getting a mortgage?

I did get him to call Stepchange a few months back, they were very helpful i thought, even got one payment down to £1 a month which I thought was great but he then decided he wanted to pay it all back quicker - which he did, of course at the expense of the other debts, whereas I'm thinking if they were happy with £1 month it could have waited but...??

I just can't get money management sense through to him, even that what seems so obvious to me, so although i still help and advise him the best I can, I'm just trying to concentrate now on making sure it doesn't bring trouble to our door :(

As long as they don't have bad credit themselves, no one else can affect there ability to obtain a mortgage or credit in general.

  • Just make sure you don't let them into your house if and when they call. Make sure everyone in the house is aware they must not cross the threshold.

Needing to show receipts for your own property is a bluff. If your other half has a car worth £650, then I doubt they would be interested in taking that as the towing charges would cost almost that.

Has he thought about a Debt Relief Order?

If he is really that skint he might be better with bankruptcy and all the Bailiffs and debt collectors are gone and his debts wiped out with a fresh start in 12 months.
It is not as daunting as it sounds.

    .
Unless you have any joint credit with him. It's highly unlikely that your children will be affected in any way by this with regards to credit scores etc but if you have a joint mortgage or anything then your credit rating will suffer. Obviously it's not terminal and can be repaired over time.

You need to encourage him to get back in touch with Stepchange. Explain that it's his mess and he needs to deal with it but you will support him emotionally as much as you can but you don't want bailiffs hassling you or your children and he needs to deal with it.
