in Gone off!
Picked up a £1.50 pre-packed bag of bananas, went to the self service check out and without thinking stuck them on the machine instead of scanning the bar code. They came up at 81p, a whopping 69p cheaper! Took them back to where I got them and picked up some loose bananas which came in at 79p and came home happy.:j:j:j

It's been like that for a while in many shops, indeed, some mini versions of the big supermarkets only sell the bagged ones which is a swindle.
When M&S started "takeaway bananas" (single bananas near the tills), they were much more than a single weighed banana twice the size.
Another plus point for the loose ones is you can see if you're getting a free tarantula!0 -
this has been going on for ages with morrisons the great banana debate0
-
Been going on for years with all the supermarkets. At least Aldi/Lidl sell them prepacked but at the same price as loose bananas everywhere else e.g. 68p per KG.0

Price is on the shelf how much they are, not really news though as it was covered a while ago but we didn't need to be told it was cheaper to buy loose than pre packed.0

Price is on the shelf how much they are.........I knew that!
not really news though as it was covered a while ago .......but I didn't know that!

........sorry mate, I for one didn't know that and at least one other person, the one who thanked me in my opening post, appears not to have known that either
Now what I don't know is why a highly intelligent person like yourself, would have such a negative attitudeto a thread that turned out to be quite interesting.

Nothing new. ALL prepacked vegetables and fruit bar a few items always cost more prepacked.
And to be honest there is not really any difference in quality.
Buy things loose, buy only what you need.
Saves adding to landfill! :AThe more I live, the more I learn.

Grapes, satsumas, baking potatoes, tomatoes and apples are cheaper bagged. I saw a customer buy 3 loose tomatoes and that was 3p less for the pack of double that amount.
Many supermarkets do this. If they find a manky carrot, apple, onion in the prepacked bags and sell that loose, they put the ok ones in the loose section. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I work in a well know supermarket, and I always advise customers to get the loose ones as they are cheaper, never knew this myself till I worked there xxYou live, You die, & the wheels on the bus go round and round .... be happy stay positive, You get 1 shot0

You can't assume that loose items will always be cheaper, you have to compare the price per kg. on both. For example loose onions in Morrisons last time I shopped were 75p a kilo, but a kilo bag was 69p. The cheapest bagged carrots are 59p a kilo, which again is cheaper than the loose ones. Of course you might still want to go with the loose ones so you can make sure you don't get any manky examples ...0

I often get the shrinkwrapped broccoli from Waitrose or Tesco - and have found on many occasions that it's very much cheaper than loose, as it's heavier than specified - I usually weigh it to compare.0
