Deodorising the home of a smoker

A close family member has recently bought a house, and I have offered to clean it for them before they move in.
I visited yesterday to assess what was required and the house stank of years of smoke. To me it is unbearable, and I plan to give the place a good airing as I work on it this afternoon.
Luckily there are no carpets or soft furnishings, it's just hard surfaces that require a thorough clean. Aside from vinegar and using bleach to scrub the walls down with, what can I use that will remove the smell of smoke? A decorator is due to repaint the whole place next week but I worry that if the walls aren't thoroughly clean the smell will persist forever.
Any fool-proof successful strategies?

Use sugarsoap rather than bleach on the walls and ceilings. There will be nicotine/tar deposits which need to be removed (and may make over painting difficult), that and a good airing should considerably reduce the smell.
Good luck0 -
Another vote for sugar soap - brilliant stuff for cleaning a smoker's home!0

Def sugar soap - you can get it in spray bottles so it's v easy to use. Not v kind to your hands, so make sure you have gloves on:AStarting again on my own this time!! - Defective flylady! :A0

Sugar soap. And wear gloves.0

Sugar soap is very good for hard surfaces, in a previous home we has to replaster the downstairs to get rid of the smell. Everywhere was brown with nicotine, the vendors had two toddlers as well!
If you have plastic ceiling roses they may need completely replacing rather than a good scrub.0 -
Use sugar soap on the walls and ceilingsBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I would recommend a mask as well if using sugar soap.. so you're not breathing in the liquid or the filth it will shift and definitely gloves!
I excelled myself the other day, I sold a pushchair to a heavily pregnant woman and she lit one up before getting in the car and I never said a word.. not a word.. but it is disgusting.. but I think smoking should be utterly banned anyway.. I'd go for banning sugar too it is highly addictive and not necessary. 2 minutes after putting 3 in my pint mug of tea!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Don't forget to wash the double glazed windows (if there are any) as I moved into a home like this and the filth that came off the windows was unbelievable0
