Hiding referrer....

I have always clicked and dragged to open in a new window in order to enter via comp links here on MSE and it worked perfectly.. right clicking and opening in a new window achieved the same result....thought I would check to make sure it was still working and saw that it wasn't.Still showed ' moneysavingexpert as the referrer in the new page.
Googled for help and found this( see link below)....did as it said and changed the value to '0' and now I do not have to click and drag , or right click, just clicking on the link opens the new page and hides the referrer......before I did it there was a warning message , hope I have not done anything I shouldn't, any techie peeps out there know if it should be OK? ...tia...( using Macbook Air and Firefox)

I tried this last night and have just had to reverse it because it's been giving me errors on various competitions all day. Evidently some pages need to be able to see what page you have come from to say that you have entered the competition successfully.0

I also tried it yesterday and have yet to experience anything like Pomdren. All pages opened fine.Thank you all who post.0

I use RefControl for FF which works well. You can set it so that it puts the referrer as the parent website that the competition is on.
Clicktowins don't like the referrer being hidden though. In FF, I have to disable RefControl for the Clicktowins otherwise the captcha gives me a "mismatch" error and I can't see them.
Was the warning thing from Firefox along the lines of voiding the warranty, here be monsters etc? That's just standard when you edit the about:config.2019 Wins

Thanks for the replies...not had any probs at all and am sticking with it as it is much quicker.....do not do Clicktowin comps but those that I have entered with Captchas have been fine....fingers crossed....0

Thanks for this, I too have always dragged links.
I used Chrome and have just downloaded "Referrer Control" however I am not sure I have done it right.
I have tested both before and after installing this and cannot see where it shows I am coming from MSE. Do you right click on the new web page you have opened and then select "view source"?
If so, I cannot find anything to do with coming fro MSE. Even tested the same in Firefox which I rarely use and still cannot see that I am coming from MSE?The best things in life are free.....0 -
In Firefox....Tools..Page Info
Shows the referrer as MSE unless you click and drag or right click. At least that is what always happened before, but for some reason has stopped working .
Now I have used the link in my first post and set the value to 0, I can just click on the link posted on MSE.( no clicking and dragging or right clicking)0 -
Thanks, I can see now how it works on Firefox but I cannot find how to view the same info on Chrome. Does anyone know please?
