How to remove charge

I was reluctant to post on here because we are as good as debt free.
Our problem is that we have a charge on the house for something that we have paid off.
We were badly in debt a good few years ago, part of this resulted in our (then) bank taking a charge out against our house. This was not removed when we had paid off the debt. We did not know they had taken out this charge at the time, we only found out when we tried to remortgage when we came out the other side.
The problem is that we are having a hard time proving we do not owe this money, they seem to assume we do unless we can prove otherwise. We are not being chased for it, we would just like to get this cleared up.
One of the things I have considered is sending an SAR letter to the bank. We are talking over 20 years ago so I am not expecting them to come back with anything, if they did we could use it to prove we have paid it off. However, my question is if they come back saying they do not have the records anymore could we use this to force them to remove the charge?
I would be grateful for any help as this is one of the last hurdles, as you can see from the badge we have paid off the mortgage now, there might be one of two small bits we have forgotten about but as far as we are concerned we are debt free.

Is it over 20years since you believe you paid it off?
Presumably you don't have any paperwork anymore to back up that it was paid?
If not then I would definitely start with a SAR.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

We have searched high and low for the paperwork and cannot find it. So we shall start with a SAR.

Hi LRR
I'm assuming it's a Caution as Enterprise said (in post #2064) that he had the LR details back and the Charge is only against his wife (and I think what Enterprise says on the "other" thread is the general thing people say about having a "Charge on the House" when they talk about having a CO?)
But then I'm assuming that, even then, a registered charge could only be done against joint debtors. Or have I got that wrong?0
