If you ask for government records, they are nearly always free.

Nearly always. GP records are part of the not always.
  • If it is just hospital letters it might be easier if you contact the specialist department in question - they might just send you a copies of the letters. This is now standard practice in England when you have had a hospital appointment.

    Psychiatry is sometimes an exception.

I think the best answer to this is to ask at your GP surgery. Depending on the reason for you wanting them and what your relationship with your GP is there may be a variety of options or charges (or not). For example I was able to get a copy of my vaccination records for free as I was applying to do voluntary work and the GP made them a charitable donation.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"
